Britannia Street Housing

Client: The Corporation of the City of Stratford

Status: Completed - 2023

Location: 200 & 230 Britannia Street, Stratford

Project Type: Affordable Housing

Service: Architecture, Interior Design

This affordable housing development on the City of Stratford's old Fairgrounds site was initiated as part of a broader plan to address needs for housing and homelessness.

From the outset, the project aimed to deliver high-quality, deeply affordable units which blended into the existing neighbourhood. To achieve this, the buildings were designed to resemble traditional townhomes, using familiar residential forms, materials, and scale. This context-sensitive approach reduced visual impact, and helped support successful community integration.

The development includes two wood-framed apartment buildings (Phase 1 - 2 storeys, 35-units & Phase 2 - 3-storeys, 27-units) which are geared toward seniors and families. Designed with accessibility at the top of mind, this project offers a number of barrier-free units, as well as accessible outdoor amenity space.

Outdoor amenity areas were designed to be fully accessible, providing opportunities for gardening, recreation, and passive enjoyment of the outdoors. These features create a welcoming environment for residents of all ages and abilities, reinforcing the project’s social purpose and alignment with the City’s goals for equitable housing.

With its barrier-free design, and focus on livability, this project is a strong example of what can be achieved through a collaborative, community-centered approach to affordable housing.
